Karolina Kuszyk: In the Houses of Others. Traces of the German Past in Western Poland.

Book Premiere and Talk with the Author

About ten million Germans left Silesia, Pomerania, the Kurmark and East Prussia at the end of the Second World War or were expelled from there. What remained were their houses, streets, factories and churches, but also their furniture, kitchen utensils and pictures. What stories do they tell today about their former owners? The areas east of the Oder and Neisse rivers were from then on in Poland, and people from other parts of the country, including displaced persons from the eastern border areas around Lviv and Vilnius, were settled there. How did they turn the towns and villages of the former occupiers into their home? Drawing on archival finds, research, literature and a multitude of personal encounters, Karolina Kuszyk tells how the biographies of people and things are interwoven.

Moderation: Christiane Hoffmann, author and First Deputy Speaker of the Federal Government
