Smyrna in Flames

Book Premiere with Lutz C. Klevemann

It is the 100th anniversary of a world-historical event: the fire of Smyrna, the legendary port city of the Ottoman Empire. Tens of thousands of people lost their lives in 1922. The flourishing metropolis, today's Izmir, was completely destroyed. The Turkish-Greek war was followed by a population exchange in which almost two million Christians and Muslims had to take flight from their homeland and which was to serve as a blueprint for all ethnic cleansing of the 20th century.

During the current refugee crisis, Lutz C. Kleveman travels for a year to the Greek islands and to Izmir - across borders and through time. In the process, he rediscovers historic Smyrna, where Greeks, Turks, Jews, Armenians, Europeans and Americans once lived together peacefully. He brings the cosmopolitan metropolis to life in a narrative and helps us understand how the catastrophe of 1922 could have happened. A catastrophe that was to change Europe forever.
