ORDER 7161: Deportation, Silence, Memory - A Photo Textbook by Marc Schroeder

Book Presentation and Talk

On 3 October 2022, the short list of nominations for the APERTURE FOUNDATION PHOTOBOOK AWARD at this year's PARIS PHOTO was announced. Marc Schroeder's book ORDER 7161, featuring eyewitness portraits of Romanian Germans deported to the Soviet Union for forced labour in 1945, is among the selected books (35 out of 1026!) and is thus already one of the winners at one of the most prestigious photo art fairs of the present day.

On 16 December 1944, Stalin signed Order 7161 - the secret decision of the State Committee for Defence - to "mobilise and intern all able-bodied Germans, males aged 17 to 45, females aged 18 to 30" from Romania, Hungary, Yugoslavia, Bulgaria and Czechoslovakia. Their subsequent deportation for forced labour served the reconstruction of the Soviet Union and was considered reparations for the destruction in World War II.

ORDER 7161 is a photo-textbook by the Luxembourg photographer Marc Schroeder, which tells the story of the deportation of Romanian Germans using 40 witness portraits as well as additional archival and contextual images.
